Melting snow in BucklandCity of Buckland Tank Farm Release

Date: 4/5/2008

Location: Buckland, Alaska

Incident Summary

On April 4, 2008, Alaska Chadux was contacted by the field representative for Kuskokwim Architect Engineers in Buckland, Alaska.  The fuel facility managed by the engineering firm had released approximately 1000 gallons of diesel fuel onto the land outside the tank farm.  Chadux was eventually hired by the RP and a Chadux representative sent to Buckland to assess the spill.  Following the assessment, Chadux worked with the RP and the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation to put together a clean up plan.  A response supervisor and an assistant was dispatched to Buckland to supervise a locally-hired crew of responders.  Snow contaminated with diesel was melted in a decon berm with the recovered fuel (approximately 2750 gallons) stored for reuse on site and the lightly contaminated water run through an oil-water separator (which recovered another 300 gallons of fuel).  The assessment phase of the operation went from April 4 through the 8th and the recovery operation lasted from April 9 until the 22nd.
