F/V Baranof Release

Date: 12/22/2008

Location: Unalaska, Alaska

Incident Summary

On December 22, 2008, Alaska Chadux was mobilized by the O’Briens Group to respond to a diesel fuel release from the F/V Baronof, a crabber/ tender moored in Dutch Harbor.  Chadux activated an in-region response team from North Pacific Fuels and Delta Western to provide initial containment of the spill while Chadux personnel and additional contractors were mobilized from Anchorage.  One Delta Western supervisor and six crew members deployed 1000 feet of harbor boom using the Delta Western work skiff.  Two Chadux supervisors plus four contract response technicians boarded a chartered plane to Dutch Harbor on the 23rd of December but a storm had already dissipated the spilled fuel.  The response technicians returned immediately to Anchorage on the charter aircraft and the two Chadux supervisors stayed an additional day to inspect the spill area and meet with the USCG Marine Safety Detachment personnel.  All personnel and equipment were returned to home base and full operational status by the evening of December 24.
